Switchover to Digital Terrestrial television

What’s changing beacause of the Digital Switchover.
  • The whole of the UK will switch to Digital terrestrial Television by 2012
  • Analogue Television signals will cease transmitting by 2012
  • Transmission of Digital signals has already started
  • The power of digital transmission will increase at switchover, increasing performance
Why change from analogue to digital television?
  • Better picture quality

  • Wider choice of channels, including radio
  • Possibility of additional services in the future e.g. High Definition Television
  • More efficient use of the broadcast spectrum
  • It’s fairer, as nearly everyone will be able to receive the digital service
When is the Digital Switchover happening?
  • From now until 2012. Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley and Worksop will have their analogue transmissions switched off in 2011.
  • Planning for the switchover began way back in 2001 with the founding of The Digital Television Project

  • iDTV
  • Freesat
  • An aerial capable of receiving a consistent digital signal
What’s Freeview?
  • Freeview, will allow you to receive over eighty Television and Radio channels. For full list click here
  • Freeview boxes and Set Top Boxes are the same thing
  • It’s a digital television receiver in its own box that sits on or near your television
What’s an iDTV?
  • iDTV stands for integrated Digital Television, or a TV with the Freeview receiver built in
What’s Freesat?
  • Freesat is a free satellite service provided by Freesat (UK) Ltd
